A Closer Look At Swinging Bridge

When embarking on a new project, A43 Architecture understands the significance of a strong partnership with our clients. We firmly believe that the key to a successful project lies in close collaboration, ensuring that the design and construction phases reflect the client's vision and needs. The result of this collaborative journey at Swinging Bridge was a stunning architectural masterpiece that truly resonates with our client's vision and the site's unique characteristics.

Client's Unique Request

Our client came to us with a single photo of a home that had a significant impact on him. This image featured a striking design element—a large cantilevered space over an outdoor patio. The photo served as a source of inspiration for the project, and this design element was incorporated into the new construction. It was particularly appropriate for the site's location near the Snake River. Just as the river sweeps along the rocky cliffs and slowly erodes the stone below, we incorporated this concept into the design, creating several instances where portions of the house cantilever out over the spaces below, creating a captivating hanging-ledge effect.

Overcoming Site Challenges

The project site presented several challenges, including its proximity to the Snake River and a major arterial highway into Jackson Hole. When we factored in the required setbacks from these elements, the remaining building envelope became even more constrained. Our task was to find a way to fit all of the client's goals within this limited space without compromising functionality and aesthetic integrity.

Our solution was a clustered set of shed structures that were oriented towards the breathtaking views of the river. In addition to providing spectacular vistas, this design choice helped reduce the impact of highway noise. We concentrated the fenestration towards the river and minimized it on the highway side, which also had the added benefit of limiting the amount of glass facing the harsh afternoon sun. This approach successfully tackled the site challenges and enhanced the overall design.

Meeting User Needs

Understanding and addressing the client's needs is at the core of our design philosophy. In this project, our client, a local business owner, sought to provide on-site housing for his employees, given the limited housing options in Teton County. With the challenge of an already constrained site, and future plans for a shop to serve his business, there wasn't enough space for a guest house. To address this, we implemented a common practice of placing a guest apartment above the garage. This autonomous living space not only fulfilled the client's need but also maximized the use of available site space.

We take great pride in serving a diverse range of clientele, from those seeking a peaceful retreat to local business owners contributing to our community. Projects like Swinging Bridge play a crucial role in our firm's legacy. They not only showcase our design expertise but also reflect our commitment to the well-being of our local community. We were truly honored to be a part of this project, and it stands as a testament to our firm's dedication to creating architecture that resonates with our clients' dreams and the unique features of each site.
