Design For 2025 Resolutions

As we embark on a new year, many of us set ambitious resolutions. Whether it’s to get fit, learn a new skill, or prioritize self-care, your home can be a powerful ally in achieving your goals. At A43 Architecture, we believe that well-designed spaces can inspire and motivate. We are excited to explore how you can design your home to support your goals for the new year and beyond.

Fitness Goals: A Home Gym Haven

If your resolution is to get fit, a dedicated home gym can be a game-changer, especially when the frigid temps of winter in the Mountain West can make it hard to leave the house. Here are a few design tips to create a space that motivates you daily:

  • Natural Light: A bright, airy space can boost your mood and energy levels. Consider large windows or skylights to maximize natural light. If natural lighting is not available because of the placement of your gym (in a basement or garage) there are many lighting accent options to choose from. No matter what fixtures you choose, we encourage clients to use dimmable lighting to adjust the mood and intensity of light to suit their activities.

  • Functional Layout: Design a space that flows seamlessly, allowing for easy movement and equipment storage. Zoning your space into a cardio area ( for treadmills, ellipticals, bikes), strength training area (for weight benches, dumbbells), and a functional training area (for yoga, pilates, stretching), can be a great way to layout your gym.

  • Flooring: We recommend investing in high-quality, non-slip absorbent flooring to reduce accidents and prevent injury.

  • Proper Ventilation: Good ventilation is crucial for maintaining air quality and preventing heat buildup in an at-home gym. This can be as simple as windows that open (although not realistic year-round in the west) and ceiling fans. Mechanical ventilation can be installed in the form of exhaust fans, whole-home ventilation systems, and air purifiers.

Culinary Adventures: A Chef’s Kitchen

Want to learn how to cook in 2025? Want to get better at cooking? Hoping your partner will take more of the cooking responsibilities? A well-designed kitchen can make the process more enjoyable and easier for all:

  • Ergonomic Design: A well-designed kitchen reduces strain and fatigue. We encourage homeowners to implement the ‘work triangle’: the optimal distance between the stove, sink, and refrigerator should be between 4-9 feet.

  • Storage solutions: Drawers and cabinets should be designed to keep utensils and cookware organized and easily accessible at all times. Pull-out shelves can make it easier to reach items stored deep in cabinets.

  • Natural Light: Good lighting is essential for food preparation. Natural light can help you see colors and textures more accurately. When natural light is unavailable, under-cabinet lighting can illuminate your work surface while hanging light fixtures can provide the perfect glow over sinks, islands, and bars.

Self-Care Sanctuary: A Serene Bedroom and Bathroom

If your goal is to reduce stress and prioritize self-care, your bedroom and bathroom can be your personal oasis:

  • Calming Colors: Soft, muted tones can create a peaceful atmosphere. Consider soothing blues, greens, or neutrals.

  • Natural materials: Without fail, we utilize natural materials in our client's bedrooms and bathrooms like wood, stone, and marble for a calming feel and elegant look.

  • Minimalist Design: A clutter-free space can promote relaxation. Keep your bedroom and bathroom free of unnecessary items. Hidden storage in cabinets and drawers can help.

  • Luxurious Features: A deep soaking tub is perfect for relaxing and unwinding especially if it is oriented towards windows with mountain views. A rainfall shower will undoubtedly provide a spa-like experience. Heated floors add a literal touch of warmth and luxury.

Remember, your home should be a reflection of your lifestyle and aspirations. By designing spaces that support your goals, you can create a more fulfilling and balanced life.
