Deep Dive With Chris Jaubert

At A43 Architecture we are passionate about good design. Our greatest asset lies in the minds behind each project. In our team features, we dive a little deeper into what drives our architects and how they infuse each design with creativity and innovation. This month, we are thrilled to feature A43 Architecture Principal and Founder Chris Jaubert, AIA.

1. What inspired you to become an architect, and what keeps you passionate about your work?

It sounds cliche, but I used to sketch floor plans as a kid. Looking back, I think it was the puzzle-solving that drew me in. I always had a knack for spatial organization and I really liked exploring different solutions to the same problem: creating a home that was highly functional, aesthetically pleasing, and spatially sound. I still very much enjoy the early stages of space planning and the process of constructing those spaces 3-dimensionally within my imagination.

2. How do you approach the design process? What steps do you take from conceptualization to completion?

Every project begins with several meetings with the client to help us determine the scope of the project (how big) and the preferred aesthetic (I don’t like to use the word “style” as it implies a fleeting sentiment). Then we scour our portfolio, along with online resources, to collect inspiration imagery to review with the client. Sometimes it could be shapes, a material palette, a singular space that evokes a certain emotion…it could be literally anything inspiring that resonates with us and our intuitions. We then take those inspirations and begin to sketch site plans, floor plans, elevations, and so on; all influenced by the information that we’ve gathered up to that point. We bounce around from 2D to 3D until we have a conceptual model that meets the clients goals and aligns with our design intent. We continue to iterate and develop the design, with the clients’ direct involvement and input, until eventually coming to a set of drawings and renderings that comprehensively convey the design. Once we attain a permit and begin construction, we are extensively involved and work in concert with the general contractor to make certain that all of our design intentions are achievable and, when necessary, cost effective.

3. What challenges do you commonly face during the design and construction phases in Jackson?

The same old story that everyone faces: costs and timelines. Construction costs have gotten so out of hand, and since we are often one of the first people a client speaks to, we tend to be the bearer of bad news. It often comes as a surprise just how much a new home or a commercial project is going to cost. The permitting process is also a huge hangup since it can take anywhere from 8 weeks to 8 months to receive a building permit. Depending on the scale of the project, the design time required could be anywhere from 6-12 months for a custom residence. So you’re talking upwards of two years before you can break ground. We often get calls from clients wanting to start construction 4-6 months out and we simply can’t respond that quickly.

4. What role does technology play in your design process, and what software or tools do you find most helpful?

Technology is critical for our everyday operations. We use the latest Building Information Modelling (BIM) software to create design and construction drawings simultaneously. It gives us the ability to create beautiful images (renderings) that we can share with the client while also creating technical drawings and details critical for the execution of the design. It allows us to clearly communicate the overall aesthetic of the project and therefore reduce the number of surprises for the client once construction begins. It also allows us to analyze the building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.) and structural components very early in the design process, which better helps us avoid any conflicts within those systems. That saves the subcontractors time, which then saves the client money.

5. How do you ensure that your designs meet building codes and regulations while maintaining creativity and innovation?

Having constraints within which we design actually helps our creative process. Personally, as a creative thinker, looking into an abyss of possibilities can be paralyzing. Having rules in place to govern your design can be beneficial as it helps me focus my creative energy. Navigating the same rules and regulations as everyone else while being challenged to derive a unique design is what I enjoy the most.

6. How do you stay updated on the latest trends and advancements in architecture and design?

Living in the digital age, there’s certainly no shortage of resources to “get your fix” on the latest trends and advancements within the industry. That only scratches the surface. The breadth of issues that impact and direct the architectural world are immense. All of us at A43 are continually watching what’s happening not only in the architectural design community, but also in the news, the weather, the fashion world, pretty much anything that affects our daily lives. All of those things influence architecture, so we are constantly studying and collecting data and synthesizing that into our design approach.
